For the vast majority of workers in the Los Angeles film industry, employment is variable. Projects end, contracts expire, and the constant search for new work is a fact of life.
A century ago, early Hollywood icons such as Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, Charlie Chaplin, and D.W. Griffith recognized the need for a safety net of health and social services to cover film industry workers who were between jobs. And so MPTF, the Motion Picture Television Fund, was incorporated in 1921.
The Motion Picture Television Fund
Beginning with a coin box in Hollywood where workers could donate spare change, the MPTF expanded into one of Hollywood’s most durable and admired institutions. Generations of filmmakers, actors, and studio executives have donated money, time, and prestige to the fund and its hospital located in Woodland Hills, CA.
Famous supporters are countless, including film director John Ford, who lent his name to a nondenominational chapel on the campus, music icon Elvis Presley, who gave the largest single-person donation to the MPTF at the time in 1965, and President Ronald Reagan, who attended the groundbreaking ceremony in 1941 and returned for a special appearance in 1991.
MPTF and Nova Vitae Treatment Center
Though the MPTF campus offers services such as care for Alzheimer’s and dementia patients and sober living, as well as assisted living, drug rehab patients are referred to Nova Vitae Treatment Center. Nova Vitae is located just a ten-minute drive away from the MPTF’s Wasserman Campus down the 101 freeway, ensuring careful coordination between the two offices.

Nova Vitae’s drug rehab services are completely confidential. The facility often works with actors, giving them a chance at healing and respite away from the public eye. Insurance secured through MPTF typically covers 100% of drug rehab services.
For those in the Los Angeles film industry suffering from drug addiction, treatment is readily available. Nova Vitae is proud to partner with the Motion Picture Television Fund to provide treatment for substance abuse.
