If you or a loved one is suffering from heroin addiction, there is help. The experienced team at Nova Vitae Treatment Center can help you recover so you can move on to recovery as quickly as possible. Heroin is one of the most frequently abused substances in the United States, often used as a replacement for prescription painkillers. Because of its easy availability, heroin has become extremely easy to abuse and has always been highly addictive.
Like other opioids, heroin is difficult to withdraw from because the symptoms are often painful and traumatic. Our focus on social recovery with counselor, small group, and medical support, is designed to get you or your loved one through heroin detox and into recovery as quickly and safely as possible.
Heroin Withdrawal Symptoms and Timeline
Heroin is a short-acting opioid with a withdrawal profile similar to most prescription painkillers. Symptoms usually begin within the first 6-12 hours, peak after 1-3 days, and have generally subsided within one week of taking the final dose. However, some users may experience considerably longer withdrawal symptoms, including Post-Acute Withdrawal Syndrome, which can last months after the final dose.
Heroin detox symptoms typically include:
- Abdominal pain and cramping
- Nausea and vomiting
- Cold and flu symptoms including watery eyes and runny nose
- Fatigue
- Sweats and chills
- General malaise
- Muscle and bone aches
- Anxiety and agitation
- Diarrhea
- Tremors or shaking
- Muscle spasms
- Inability to concentrate
- Insomnia or nightmares
- Rapid heart rate
- Hypertension
- Cravings
- Respiratory issues
While most users experience a similar spectrum of withdrawal symptoms, heroin withdrawal is not the same for everyone. Your body weight, metabolism, length and volume of abuse, and even the purity of the drug and how you used it will affect the symptoms experienced.
Types of Heroin Detox Available at Nova Vitae
Nova Vitae offers medically supported heroin detox or a social model detox option.
Under a medical detox, you are given a prescription medication to reduce withdrawal symptoms and cravings, and also prevent you from getting sick. In most cases, this will be suboxone or buprenorphine, which are safer opioids with a lighter withdrawal profile. Switching to either of these drugs allows you to go into behavioral therapy and gradually taper off your drug use while keeping withdrawal symptoms to a manageable level. This form of detox is very safe, greatly reduces complications from withdrawal, and allows addicts to build coping mechanisms before quitting their heroin use completely.
Under a social model detox, you detox naturally, weathering the symptoms under the watchful eye of our medical team. You reside in comfortable surroundings with 24/7 monitoring to catch symptoms as they arise. While you will experience the full onset of withdrawal symptoms, which can be very painful and difficult, some patients prefer social model detox because the process proceeds more quickly.
If you or a loved one is struggling with heroin use, help is available at Nova Vitae. People start using heroin for a variety of reasons, including mental health problems and the use of other opioids as a gateway drug. Whatever the reasons, the holistic detox care available at Nova Vitae is the first step toward quitting heroin while dealing with the underlying issues that drove you to heroin in the first place, so you can move forward with a drug free life.

Important Steps to Addiction Rehabilitation
Treatment Programs
“Inpatient” then means that the patient needs to be admitted to an addiction treatment center for therapy and detox, typically because he/she needs to be closely monitored.
Intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) are treatment programs used to address addictions, depression, eating disorders, or other dependencies that do not require detoxification or round-the-clock supervision.
Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is the use of medications in combination with counseling and behavioral therapies, which is effective in the treatment of opioid use disorders (OUD) and can help some people to sustain recovery.
Outpatient rehab is a form of alcohol or drug rehabilitation that allows patients to live at home (or in another safe and therapeutic environment, such as sober living)
Partial hospitalization provides a structured program of outpatient psychiatric services as an alternative to inpatient psychiatric care.
Sober living houses (SLHs) are alcohol and drug free living environments for individuals attempting to abstain from alcohol and drugs
A men’s rehab program is dedicated to helping men overcome drug and alcohol addiction.
Through gender-specific treatment, Redemption Addiction Treatment Center helps address key issues and obstacles that women face in their early recovery.
